Jonah's Assignment
In “Jonah’s Assignment,” Ebony Brinson explores the cost of disobedience and the mercy of God through the story of the prophet Jonah. When God gives a divine assignment, running from it delays purpose and invites unnecessary storms. Just as Jonah fled and found himself swallowed by consequence, many today avoid the calling God has placed on their lives. “To obey is better than sacrifice.” (1 Samuel 15:22) This post challenges readers to stop running, trust God's plan, and walk boldly in obedience. Your assignment is kingdom work; don’t forfeit it out of fear. God equips those He calls.

As followers of Christ, we all have an assignment, a divine mandate etched into our very existence. We were not created to wander aimlessly, but to walk in purpose, aligned with the perfect will of God.
The question we must ask daily is:
“Lord, what would You have me do today?”
“How can I better steward what You’ve entrusted to me?”
“How can I serve You more faithfully, more boldly, more completely?”
These are the questions that reveal the posture of a surrendered heart. But once God answers, we must be willing to obey immediately. Too often, like Jonah, we run from the very thing God has called us to do. Why? Because the instructions are uncomfortable, the mission seems bigger than us, or the answer doesn’t match our expectations. But we must remember: once God sets you apart, there is no going back.
“But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.”
(1 Peter 2:9, NKJV) We have been set apart to be disciples, to carry the Gospel, and to bring the light of Jesus to a dark and dying world.
“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” (Matthew 28:19, NKJV) Every believer has a God-given gift, a talent to be used for the glory of the Kingdom.
“To one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one, to each according to his own ability.” (Matthew 25:15, NKJV) The question is: What are you doing with what God gave you? Will you bury it in fear, or will you multiply it in faith?
“But his lord answered and said to him, ‘You wicked and lazy servant... You ought to have deposited my money with the bankers, and at my coming, I would have received back my own with interest.’”
(Matthew 25:26-27, NKJV)
God has already equipped you with everything you need to fulfill your assignment.
“His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and goodness.” (2 Peter 1:3, NIV)
Jonah ran from his assignment, and it cost him. His disobedience stirred the wrath of God, endangered others, and delayed his destiny. What are you running from that God is calling you to run toward? Fear is not from God. It is a lie from the enemy to keep you stagnant.
“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”
(2 Timothy 1:7, NKJV) If God has called you, He will not abandon you. “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you.” (Deuteronomy 31:6, NIV) Seek His face. He will give you the wisdom, clarity, and strategy to fulfill your divine assignment. Trust Him. Believe Him. Obey Him.
For obedience is better than sacrifice, and the reward of obedience is the fulfillment of purpose.
“To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams.” (1 Samuel 15:22, NIV)
Stop running. Start walking, in purpose, in power, and in complete obedience.
Shalom.
